ABSTRACT
The leaves of Cinnamomum tamala, are commonly known as Tejp?t in Unani System of Medicine.
It belongs to the family Lauraceae, and is widely distributed throughout South Asian countries.
The leaves are used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Other than leaves, its bark and essential
oil obtained from both leaf and bark have been widely used for their therapeutic activity. In Unani
System of Medicine, it has been used for centuries for treating various cardiac, neurological,
gastrointestinal, and ophthalmic diseases. Recent scientific studies have also revealed its
antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and other
pharmacological activities. The present review showed the importance of Tejpat as a culinary spice
as well as a drug of multitudinous therapeutic value. In view of this, it can be inferred that the plant
is valuable for the researchers to study in detail.
