ABSTRACT
Alginate is a naturally occurring polysaccharide from marine-sourced brown algae. Its physicochemical properties like solubility, biodegradation, and biocompatibility make it useful in drug delivery. The mucoadhesive property of alginate indicates its use as a potential drug carrier in mucosal delivery systems. In the recent past, delivery of drugs on the mucosal side has been dramatically increased due to prolonged residential time, localised drug action, lower systemic drug concentration, and bypassing of the first pass metabolism. This review article provides an overview of alginate and its use as different drug carriers in mucosal delivery systems. Keywords: Alginate, Mucoadhesive, Mucosal delivery system, Drug carrier
