CASE STUDY OF VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY CAUSING HYPERPIGMENTATION
Authors: Syed Kashif Mohiuddin

ABSTRACT
Vitamin B12 has an important role in synthesis of DNA. Deficiency of vitamin B12 is associated with hematologic, neurologic, psychiatric, gastrointestinal, dermatologic, and cardiovascular conditions. Vitamin B12 deficiency is also a common cause of megaloblastic anaemia. It is a cause of peripheral neuropathy, sub acute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, ataxia, optic atrophy, psychosis, depression, and dementia [1]. It is a possible risk factor for thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and stroke [1]. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes skin hyper pigmentation, vitiligo (depigmentation), angular chelitis, and hair changes. A diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency is mostly ignored in its early stages because these signs are not specific only to vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is present only in meat, it cannot be synthesized in the human body, and must be supplied in the diet. Hence, a detailed history of food and dietary habits is needed when evaluating the patient Keywords: Vitamin B12, Hyperpigmentation, Megaloblastic anaemia
