ABSTRACT
Background: Patterns and behaviours of drinking has a strong bearing on alcohol-related
negative consequences. Only few studies have been conducted in this area in Karnataka state.
Aim: The current study aims to assess the alcoholic drinking behaviour among alcohol
dependent people seeking de-addiction treatment in Hassan district, Karnataka.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study, after obtaining
Institutional Ethics Committee clearance and CTRI approval, was conducted among 402
subjects who sought treatment for alcoholic addiction at different centres in Hassan district of
Karnataka. Screening of the participants were done by the ICD 10 criteria for alcohol
dependence and specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Alcoholic drinking behaviours
were obtained by a personalised in-depth, semi structured interview using specially designed
questionnaire with each subject. Descriptive statistics in terms of frequency, percentage,
mean with standard deviation were used to analyse and represent the obtained data.
