IGBO TRADITIONAL MEDICINE AND CHINESE MEDICAL PRACTISING: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS Authors: Okoro Kingsley N
ABSTRACT
Traditional Igbo Medicine (TIM) and Traditional Chinese medicine (CM) remain part of the
most ancient yet living traditions. In Igbo land, traditional healers prescribing medicinal plants
are the most easily accessible and affordable health resource available to the local community
and at times the only therapy that subsists. Nonetheless, there is still a paucity of updated
comprehensive compilation of promising medicinal plants from the African continent, compared
to its counterpart, the Chinese Medicine. China has been successful in promoting its therapies
with more research and science-based approach, while the Igbo traditional medicine still needs
more extensive scientific research and evidence base. This paper gives an overview of basic
principles and commonalities of traditional Igbo medicine and Chinese Medicine, and discusses
key determinants of success, which these great traditions need to address to compete in global
markets.
