ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF Anisomeles malabarica (L.) R.Br LEAVES EXTRACTS Authors: K. Jeevanantham And A. Zahir Hussain
ABSTRACT
Plants contain a variety of bioactive chemicals with tremendous uses in the pharma industry.
Methanolic leaves extracts of A. malabarica (L.) R. Br was analyzed in order to find a new
source of antimicrobial and antioxidant constituents. Four gram positive, four gram negative
bacteria and two fungal strains were tested for antimicrobial activity. The antioxidant activity of
methanolic extracts was evaluated using the DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and reducing power assays.
The antioxidant activities of the leaves extract showed that significantly inhibited all radicals.
When compared to the standard, the methanolic leaves extracts of A. malabarica (L.) R. Br
showed higher antioxidant activity. This research has found that A. malabarica (L.) R. Br
extracts have higher antibacterial activity, which could be beneficial to nutritive and medicinal
purposes.
