ABSTRACT
Cytochromes are the conjugated proteins consisting of heme as the prosthetic group. They can
undergo oxidation and reduction. These proteins are involved in the electron transfer chain which
is important in the process of respiration occurring in the mitochondria. There are three types of
cytochrome namely cytochrome A, cytochrome B, and cytochrome C. The primary function of
Cytochrome c is synthesis of ATP and it is also involved in intrinsic type 2 apoptosis.
Cytochrome P450 is another cytochrome which is present in the microsomes of the liver and
plays an important role in the detoxification. This review was aimed to highlight and discuss
these cytochromes.
